"Light Be"

Different translations of Genesis chapter one verse three are as follows:

3 (RSV) And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
3 (ASV) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
3 (BBE) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
3 (Darby) And God said, Let there be light. And there was light.
3 (Douay) And God said: Be light made. And light was made.
3 (ERV) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
3 (ESV) And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.
3 (GWV) Then God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light.
3 (JB2000) And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.
3 (JPS) And God said: ‘Let there be light.’ And there was light.
3 (KJ21) And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
3 (Message) God spoke: "Light!" And light appeared.
3 (NKJV) Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
3 (VULGATE) dixitque Deus fiat lux et facta est lux

Our English language is at times peculiar.

The phrase "LET it be" is troublesome, because it implies a request of permission to a probably-higher authority to allow something.

Not only that, but the statement: "Let there be light" brings up the thought of: Let where be light?

The familiar lyrics of Sammy Cahn's Christmas song "Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow . . . are equally disturbing.

WHO is Sammy Cahn imploring in his petition for snowfall? The Great Snowmaker in the Sky (Jesus Christ)? Must he beg the Lord for there to be snowfall, or continuing snowfall with God's permission using the request word of "Let"?

The Bible or paraphrased-Bible versions above relating to Genesis 1:3 are burdened with that "Let" word - except for the Message, the Douay, and the Vulgate.

The Message paraphrased Bible simply has the word "Light!" but not associating it with the idea of bringing light into being. The action of creating it is, of course, implied - but that is not enough, being that simply stating the word "Light!" by itself could also mean that God observed something that was already there and simply commenting on its already-existing presence.

The best, I guess, would be the Latin Vulgate dixitque Deus fiat lux et facta est lux" (literally: "called God to exist light and made was light") -- nicely rendered in the Douay version as: And God said: "Be light made." And light was made.

Another way to put it (which might never get into any new Bible translation) is: "Light, exist."

Does even that imply that light was an already-present entity which was ordered to start to exist?

And the "Let there be . . ." commands continue on in Genesis for other more complex phenomena, eventually culminating in the only thing which had a freewill nature of itself (and, with respect to gender: himself and herself) - which is humanity.

But it is vital to understand that humanity and individuals of such did not of their own free will bring themselves into being (i.e. into existence). They did not pre-exist, they did not create themselves, nor by themselves did they bring themselves into existence.

Adam and Eve did not ask to be created before being created, although [logically] they did not object to be created before they were created.

Once they were existing, their own free wills were functional - but merely to a limited extent, however.

First Corinthians 15:27 For God has put all things in subjection under His feet." But when it says, "All things are put in subjection under Him," it is plain that He is excepted who put all things under Him.

The same Creator who formed man and woman put them into an immutably-set environment which was not first created, nor originated, nor built, nor constructed nor operating according to the whims of either man or woman. It is within that context and those confines that all humanity yet exercises their limited capacity for free will within the restricted scope of what the Creator has designed, maintains, and allows.

Such confining environmental restriction for humanity and persons comprising them will never end eternally.

We as humans will never attain nor achieve equality nor supremacy to our Creator. He will always be wiser, more powerful, more knowledgeable - both omniscient and omnipresent - which we humans will never become.

True, in eternal life when in glory with Him we will have far-advanced abilities and capacities we do not now have, but the LORD will always have "the upper hand" over us throughout eternity.

Does it irritate you, and/or me, that God has such non-conquerable authority over you? Does it tick you off, and/or me, that He in His divine plan and intention will - with his non-stoppable authority - raise us back to life someday [ without our permission nor approval or lack of it ] to stand in judgment in His presence?

Then either place you and/or me in Heaven to ETERNALLY live perfectly in 24/7 TOTAL obedience - with NO deviation ever - with Him in His absolutely-holy presence . . . or instead FOREVER confine you and/or me to to perpetual flaming torment in the invisible-outer-darkness Lake of Fire?

If it does peeve you, or me, that has to be dealt with and resolved with - hopefully with proper humble and submissive response - if you, and/or I, want Him and intend to have Him consign you, and/or me, to everlasting joy and bliss in eternal glory.

Now we essentially are back to where we started with the "Let" enigma.

Actually, it does not matter WHAT you (or I) want or do not want. It does NOT matter (in one sense) what you (or I) intend to "have" Him do OR not do regarding or concerning you (or me).

He WILL do to you (and me), for you (and me), or against you (and me) whatever He wants and intends to do.

But what that is of course depends upon your (and/or my)positive or negative response to Him and His intentions pertaining to you (and me). And YOU (and I) determine whether such "pertaining" is either regarding or instead concerning you (and me):

Deuteronomy 32:39 "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand."
Second Samuel 7:22 Therefore you are great, LORD God; for there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
First Kings 8:23 . . . "Oh LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing continual love to your servants who walk in your presence with all their heart;
Second Kings 5:15 Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him; and he said, "Hey, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so accept now a present from your servant."
First Chronicles 17:20 There is none like you, Oh LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Second Chronicles 6:14 . . . "Oh LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing continual love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart;
Isaiah 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and His Redeemer [Jesus Christ, the Son of God, one with the Father in the Godhead of The three-in-one Trinity], the LORD of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god."
Isaiah 45:5 " I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God."

Job 34:17 Shall one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn Him who is righteous and mighty,
18 who says to a king, 'Worthless one,' and to nobles, 'Wicked man';
19 who shows no partiality to princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor, for they are all the work of His hands?
20 In a moment they die [ God is not dead! ]; at midnight the people [ not God ] are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away by no human hand.
21 For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, and He sees all his steps.
22 There is no gloom or deep darkness where evildoers may hide themselves.
23 For He has not appointed [ i.e. pre-scheduled ] a time for any man to go before God in judgment.
24 He shatters the mighty without investigation [no plea bargain, no parole], and sets others in their place.
25 Thus, knowing their works, He overturns them [ not vice-versa! ] in the night, and they are crushed.
26 He strikes them for their wickedness in the sight of men,
27 because they turned aside from following Him, and had no regard for any of His ways,
28 so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to Him, and He heard the cry of the afflicted--
29 When He is quiet, who can condemn? When He hides His face, who can detect Him, whether it be a nation or a man? . . .
30 that a godless man should not reign, that he should not ensnare the people.
31 For has any one said to God, 'I have borne chastisement; I will not offend any more [give me another chance; be tolerant in unconditional love, I am only human];
32 teach me what I do not see [ I did not know that that was wrong; nobody ever told me ]; if ["IF?"] I have done iniquity, I will do it no more' [ I promise to never do that again, ever - cross my heart, so give me a break ]?
33 Will He then make requital to suit you, because you reject it? [ It does not matter whether you like it or do not like it; your opinion pro or con is always outweighed by His determination!] For you must choose, and not I; therefore declare what you know.

Job 35:5 Look at the heavens, and see; and consider the clouds, which are higher than you.
6 If you have sinned, what do you accomplish against Him? And if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to Him?
7 If you are righteous, what do you give to Him; or what does He receive from your hand?
8 Your wickedness concerns a man like yourself, and your righteousness a son of man.
9 Because of the multitude of oppressions people cry out; they call for help because of the arm of the mighty.
10 But none says, 'Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,
11 who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?'
12 There they cry out, but He does not answer, because of the pride of evil men [ and now you know why God often does not answer mindless blattering-off-at-the-mouth prayer! ] .
13 Surely God does not hear an empty cry, nor does the Almighty regard it.
14 How much less when you say that you do not see Him [ it does not matter that He is invisible ], that the case is before Him, and you are waiting for Him [ God does not adjust to your timing or time schedule ]!

When it eventually dawned upon Job (pronounced: Johb) the exclusive and absolute sovereign authority of God his Creator, the somewhat-besieged-by-Satan Old-Testament prophet Job made the correct and not incorrect decision ultimately (and permanently?); he made the wise and not the foolish choice; he made the right and not the wrong choice:

Job 42:2 "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted."
Job 42:5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;
Job 42:6 therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

Notice that he despised himself - rather than despising, ridiculing, blaspheming or even doubting and questioning God.

Many on the broad and easy road to destruction, for some mysterious cause, will choose to arrogantly and insubordinately rebel and not accommodate to the benevolent yet one-way-only Creator God:

Isaiah 10:22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.

Matthew 7:13 Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit.
18 A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Thus you will know them by their fruits.
21 Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.'

Luke 13:24 Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

Romans 9:27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved."

Second Peter 2:2 And many will follow their licentiousness, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.

Not only will the way of truth be reviled, but those who hold fast to truth (about homogay sodomy unions, the wicked choice to commit and not perform abortion homicide, being against Israeli settlements, defiant feminist sexism, evolution mythology instead of Biblical creationism, being for summertime modesty instead of pornographic exhibitionism of loose long hair, naked sleeevesless arms, nude slacksless legs, socksless feet in noisy flipflop sandals, etc.) . . . will be persecuted in various ways to various extents (e.g. shunned and quaranteened by neighbors, recipients of scurrilous laughter and snide remarks, employment termination, not getting hired, not getting promoted on the job, bypassed for acquiring a sales opportunity, graffiti and other vandalism, harassed with gossip and burdened with time-consuming expensive lawsuits, misunderstood and fined by compliant-with-evil-agitators police, and more).

For most of us, however:

First Peter 4:1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same thought, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer by human passions but by the will of God.
3 Let the time that is past suffice for doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
4 They are surprised that you do not now join them in the same wild profligacy, and they abuse you (like mis-calling your sacred and mandatory missionary communications: "unsolicited bulk-mail spam");
5 but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

Hebrews 12:4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

Have you (and I) made the correct, wise, and right choice yet?
If so, will you (and I) continue with that correct, wise, and right choice?

Psalm 115:3 Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

Mark 3:27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man; then indeed he may plunder his house.

John 3:2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with Him."
John 3:27 John answered, "No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven.
John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at The Last Day.
John 6:65 And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."

First Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 9:19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who can resist His will?"
Romans 9:20 But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me thus?"
